INTERVIEW with LUME LEGEND – ARDI WEBBER aka
WHERE ARE YOU FROM? WHERE DO YOU LIVE NOW?
I live on the sunshine coast in Queensland, Australia and I’ve been here for a long time.
WHAT IS YOUR FULL-TIME PROFESSION?
Solar farm construction.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN PHOTOGRAPHY?
A little less than three years now.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY? TELL US THE WHOLE STORY…
I used to skateboard and bodyboard, and so I picked up a little digital camera and shot with my mates. A few years later, my interest picked back up and I was so inspired by what I was seeing on Facebook and Instagram, and decided to give it a go for myself.
WHAT’S IN YOUR CAMERA BAG RIGHT NOW?
Basically I’ve got my camera, 3 lenses… I use the same wide-angle for most of my shots, some Lume Cubes and some filters. It’s a nice small pack
WHERE DOES NIBSCLICK COME FROM?
Nibs is my nickname and I had to make a name for myself on Facebook/Instagram, so I just went with it.
WHAT CONNECTS YOU SO STRONGLY TO THE LANDSCAPE?
I love nature. I have always been going on walkabouts in the bush, my mum used to take me and my sister out, and I just love it. There aren’t massive mountains where I live, but everything else like the beach and waterfalls is so close, I love being amongst it.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO MAKE YOUR LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHS?
I just love being out there and if I can take something back with me, like a memory or a photo, something to look back at than it’s wonderful. I love being able to look back in a few years and spark my memory through photographs, being able to see and remember what happened on that day.
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN TO BALANCE THE SOFT, DREAMINESS IN SOME OF YOUR IMAGES AND THE POWER OF THE NATURAL WORLD YOU SHOW IN OTHERS?
With every shot I take and go to edit/process, I look first and then think “how do I want to represent this photo?” In my images, waterfalls have very a dreamy, fantasy feeling – I think they look awesome like that. With waves, I try to keep the strength and clarity. It just depends on the day, and every shot is different.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE JUST STARTING OUT IN PHOTOGRAPHY?
Just take lots and lots of photos. Practice a lot. When I started, my first camera was a Canon 750D, and I think I took 750,000+ photos in the first four-five months. And don’t forget to have fun.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE OR MANTRA?
Don’t take it too seriously. If photography becomes like a job and not fun, think about it again. Just have fun and do what you want to do. Do what makes you feel good.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE HOW YOU MADE YOUR FAVORITE IMAGE WITH A LUME CUBE?
It was one of the first shots I tried when I got the Lume Cubes, and I used all four to light up a rock pool and got a long exposure with a nice sunset. I put the cubes in the pool to light it up and it was really handy to have since they’re waterproof, and it came out alright.
WHAT HAVE LUME CUBES ALLOWED YOU TO DO THAT YOU COULDN’T PREVIOUSLY
I just got a waterproof housing for my camera, a few months ago, and I’ve always wanted one since I started doing bodyboarding images. It’s great with the Lume Cubes because it’s been such a saving of money–instead buying a flash and flash housing–the Lume Cubes do just as good a job in the water with waves. Where I need light, the Lume Cubes have been super handy and amazing, I can put them almost anywhere. I love them..
ANY SPECIAL PROJECTS IN THE WORKS YOU CAN SHARE WITH US?
Yeah, I’m waiting to see if I can get a drone mount for the Lume Cubes to go with my Mavic that I want to try out some ideas at night time and during some storms. Stay tuned for some lightning and cubes.
