Where was this image taken?
I took this image in front of my Christmas tree in our living room. Groot is dangling from the lights which are suspended from a broomstick resting on two chairs.
How did you come up with the idea? Is this an idea you have been wanting to try?
There is a Disney/Marvel ornament we’ve had for a long time with the same concept. I’ve wanted to do this shot for a few years, but time always seems to escape me at the end of the year. I found myself with a free evening this season and fortunately this was a pretty quick shot.
Let's talk about lighting! How did you use Lume Cube to light the scene?
I used one of my Lume Cube 2.0s as a flash to illuminate the camera side of Groot.
Can you share your camera and camera settings for this shot?
This shot was done with a Canon 5D Mark III and my 100mm lens. The shot settings were 1 second shutter, f/3.2 and ISO 100.
What has been the most rewarding part of your photography experiences?
These days I primarily consider myself a toy photographer, so one major plus has been of course buying toys! But really, the most rewarding part of this hobby has been the like minded people I’ve met and the relationships that have formed.
What has been the most challenging?
Translating a shot in my head into what I see through the camera. It’s very rare when a shot comes through the way I imagined it, so it’s all the more exciting when it does.
What is your post-process when it comes to editing?
I always shoot with my Canon, but 99% of my edits are all done on my phone. So each shot goes through various apps, but the staples which nearly every photo goes through is Lightroom, Photoshop, Snapseed.
Did this photo turn out how you initially envisioned it?
No. I envisioned it with Groot being brighter and the shot being brighter overall. Lighting is something I’m convinced I’ll never master and it’s where I spend most of my time tweaking when I shoot.

I just hope it made a few people smile! And honestly, I love my Lume Cubes and having control over them with the app. When shooting toys, sometimes you hide a light in places which aren’t convenient to get to and adjust. So being able to control it through the app is great!
